New York DMV Drivers License Renewal

It’s pretty easy to forget to renew your New York drivers license. Because it doesn’t expire every year, many people simply don’t keep track of their renewal date – and sometimes that can make renewing an NY license a real hassle. While we can’t remember that date for you, we can tell you the different NY DMV license renewal options and make it easy for you to keep your license up to date and valid.

While everyone’s license has a different expiration date, there are a couple of timeframes that you’ll need to be aware of. First, you’re allowed to renew your license up to one year before the expiration date. New York license renewal is available for up to 2 years after your current license expires – but keep in mind that once it does expire, it’s an invalid license and driving with it could lead to tickets and fines. If you go for more than 2 years without renewing your expired license, you can’t renew it – you’ll need to apply for a new license. (You’re also not allowed to renew a suspended or revoked license, nor are you allowed to renew a learner’s permit.)

If you renew your license 41 days or more before your 21st birthday, your license will have “UNDER 21” written on it (as a heads-up to anyone who may be able to sell you liquor). To spare yourself from unnecessary scrutiny once you reach the state’s legal drinking age, if you can you may want to wait until after you turn 21 to renew your license.

The easiest way to renew your NY driver’s license is by doing it online. Save yourself some time and renew your drivers license online! Most New Yorkers will be able to do this; you can renew your license online at the New York DMV Renew License webpage. Before you do, however, you’ll need to pass a vision test. You don’t have to go to a DMV office to do this; you can actually visit a DMV-approved vision test provider, who’ll give you your DMV license renewal test and then electronically submit the results directly to the New York DMV. For a complete list of participating optometrists that provide certified tests required to renew drivers license NYC and additional information, visit the New York DMV Vision Registry Locator webpage.

There are some exceptions to online NY license renewal. Holders of New York Commercial Drivers Licenses can only renew their CDL at a DMV office. Other reasons that require you to renew NY licenses at a DMV office include:

You want to convert to an enhanced driver license (EDL)
You have a conditional or restricted license
You have a driver license that displays the words “VALID WITHOUT PHOTO”
You want a new photo
You currently participate in the ignition interlock device program
You hold a Temporary Visitor license that has expired, and you have proof of an extension from the INS

To find the DMV office closest to you, visit the New York DMV Office Locations page. But don’t rush out the door just yet! Before you head to the DMV, you may be able to save yourself some time by making a reservation. The New York DMV Reservations page has a list of offices that allow you to do so. Renewing Your New York Driver License: a Pain-Free Guide to the Renewal Process

Renewing your driver license can feel like a pain, but it’s a lot easier to handle if you understand the basics of the renewal process ahead of time. If you don’t renew your license before it expires and you continue to drive, you could face fines and penalties. These are the things you should keep in mind about renewing your New York driver license.

Your driver license will most likely expire on your birthday, and you’ll receive a renewal notice about a month and a half before it expires. If you have a valid New York license, you can renew it up to a year before it expires and up to two years after it expires. If it’s been more than two years since you had a valid license, you’ll need to apply for a New York State license, which includes a written test, a vision test, a road test, and a required course. Members of the military that are on active duty and stationed outside of New York can complete a form and have their license extended until they return home.

No matter why you’re renewing your license or how you renew it, you’ll need to pass a new vision test. One way to take a vision test is to visit a vision care professional that’s part of the DMV’s Online Vision Registry. Vision providers may charge a fee for this service, and you can search for approved providers by zip code on the local DMV website.

If you choose to renew your license in-person, you’ll need to complete an application form, take a vision test or bring in proof of your recent exam results, and bring payment for your renewal fee. You can renew your license by mail by sending in the required application forms, proof of vision test, proof of identification, and payment. It may be easiest to renew your license online, as long as your license hasn’t been suspended or revoked and if you don’t need to change your address.

The fee to renew your license depends upon your driver license class. At this time, Class D, DJ, and non-CDL Class C licenses can be renewed for between $64.50 and $80.50. Class M and MJ license renewals cost $72.50 to $88.50. And Class E license renewals cost $112.50 to $128.50. Additional fees may apply for certain endorsements and if you live in certain counties. Most major credit cards and debit cards, as well as personal checks, money orders, and cash are accepted for in-person renewals. Mail renewals must be paid for by check or money order and a credit card must be used for online renewals. Clearly, there are a lot of details involve in renewing your New York driver license, but it generally only comes every eight years and you’ll avoid costly fines by keeping it up to date!
